Hemangioma is a common type of benign tumor or abnormal growth of blood vessels that can occur anywhere in the body. These growths are usually not present at birth but may appear shortly after or during infancy. Hemangiomas are more common in premature infants and occur more frequently in females.
There are two main types of hemangiomas:
1. Infantile Hemangiomas: These are the most common type and are typically found on the skin, often on the head and neck regions. They grow rapidly during the first few months of life and then gradually start to shrink and disappear over time. Most infantile hemangiomas do not cause any significant health issues and often resolve on their own without requiring treatment.
2. Congenital Hemangiomas: Unlike infantile hemangiomas, congenital hemangiomas are present at birth. They are fully developed when the baby is born and do not go through a rapid growth phase like infantile hemangiomas. Congenital hemangiomas can be either rapidly involuting or non-involuting, depending on whether they shrink over time or remain stable.
In many cases, hemangiomas do not cause any problems and may not require treatment. However, there are situations where medical intervention may be necessary, such as when the hemangioma interferes with vital functions, obstructs vision, affects breathing, or causes significant cosmetic concerns. Treatments may include medication, laser therapy, or, in rare cases, surgical removal.
If you suspect that you or someone you know has a hemangioma, it is important to seek medical evaluation from a healthcare professional, preferably a dermatologist or a pediatrician, to determine the appropriate course of action and ensure proper management.
