Ears that stick out too far are often the
focus of ridicule. Kids tease each other and can be cruel at times.
Adults may choose for this operation because they want to change
hairstyle, or just because it harmonises the facial appearance.
Ears and earlobes can also be reduced in size.
Each anatomical problem requires its own solution.
Incisions are usually made just behind the
ear in order to keep visible scarring to an absolute minimum.
This way, the surgeon will carefully resculpture the cartilaginous
structures as required for a permanent result.
After the surgery the ear or ears are heavily bandaged for a
few days. When only earlobes are treated, no such bandaging is
required.
Swelling and bruising may be noticeable for a week or two and
after 2 weeks normal sporting activities are possible.
Each ear correction can be done under
local anaesthesia, which means that the patients
are able to walk out of surgery.
The surgery can also be performed under traditional narcosis.
Traditional narcosis isnt necessary.
With more efficient painkilling, intravenous sedation suffices
rather than having to undergo general anaesthesia. Contrary to
traditional narcosis, in which a tube is brought into the throat
and connected to a breathing apparatus, you actually breathe on
your own. While you sleep you breathe independently and feel no
pain.
A few hours after the surgery you feel fine and have been spared
the side effects of general anaesthesia.
