HAIR RESTORATION SURGERY - Eyelash and Eyebrow Transplant Surgery

Eyebrows and eyelashes are important for facial symmetry. A person without or, with a defect at the eyebrows or eyelashes may feel very self-conscious about his appearance. Hair transplant surgery may offer the solution. Microsurgical hair restoration surgery can restore the eyelashes and/or eyebrows and, at the same time, the self-confidence of the patient.

Eyebrows and eyelashes can be lost in different ways:
Trauma: accident, burns, ..
Diseases and medical treatments.
Congenital defects: Genetics.
Self – inflicted plucking.
Cancer treatment:  radiation therapy, chemotherapy, surgical removal of a tumour.
The meticulous placement of the hairs to each eyebrow or eyelid can restore a most natural looking appearance. Important steps include the microscopic dissection of the individual hairs, placing the grafts at a specific angle to mirror their natural position.

Eyelash Hair Transplantation

Under local anaesthesia the surgeon takes micro-grafts from the scalp area and implants the grafted follicles – the permanent hairs - to the eye lid.

The grafts are divided into single follicle units. Any excess fat, dermis, and epidermis is trimmed to make each micro-graft very fine. After anesthetizing the eyelid and protecting the cornea of the eye with an eye shield, the hair transplant surgeon brings the transplants into the eyelid.

Every hair follicle is implanted one by one:  all micro- grafts are single follicle hairs, meticulously placed into the eye with a very fine transplanting needle. The procedure takes about one to three hours.

After transplantation, the new eye lashes grow longer than natural lashes and therefore must be trimmed regularly.

This very sophisticated micro surgical procedure results in everlasting growing eyelashes. This means that the length of the eyelashes can be determined by the patient.

Eyebrow Reconstruction

Under local anaesthesia the surgeon takes grafts from the scalp area and implants these to the eyebrows.

Some people may wish to correct defects in the eyebrow; others may wish to fill out patchy eyebrows. Absence or defects can be caused by scars, trauma, burns, or by a medical condition.

The grafts, taken from the rear of the scalp, are divided into single hair follicle grafts, which are then implanted one by one to the eyebrow. Eyebrows may require several hundreds of single-hair grafts, depending on the extent of the reconstruction.

The hair restoration surgeon takes careful attention to the direction and angle of the eyebrow hairs’ growth. The surgeon can successfully transform patchy or absent eyebrows into natural-looking eyebrows. About 90% of newly transplanted hairs survive and create a dense growth of eyebrow hair.

After Care

Both eyelash and eyebrow transplant surgeries yield very positive results, with patients experiencing few complications. Bleeding is minimal, there is no visible scarring, and overall the results appear quite natural.

Itching is the most common postoperative complication. Scratching can be a risk for infection. The surgeon will in this case prescribe medications to relieve itching and eyeglasses may be worn to deter scratching.

As the transplanted hairs grow in their new position they may require occasional trimming as well as "training" with some gel or wax.
