Cerebral palsy is a group of disorders that can involve brain and nervous system functions, such as movement, learning, hearing, seeing, and thinking. For people afflicted with this condition, the main problem rise with their limitations in terms of physical activity and mental development. Cerebral Palsy (CP) is caused mainly by injury or damage on the brain which can occur anytime when the fetus is still in the womb or during the first 2 years of age.
Cerebral Palsy has long been thought to be an incurable condition due to the brain damage occurring at a very early stage of development. Since the very beginning, people who suffered from CP has been given comfortable care without any possibility of cure.
WHAT IS THE ROLE OF STEM CELL IN TREATING CEREBRAL PALSY?
In 2013, the world of medicine has been rocked with the news of a boy who suffered a heart attack that would have left him in a vegetative state. The said boy received intravenous stem cell treatment from his own umbilical cord blood, which was frozen from his birth. According to his doctors, his condition greatly improved within months after the treatment and at 40m months post treatment, the patient was able to walk with support and speak words again.
In animal studies, stem cells have been shown to migrate to damaged brain tissue. In previous studies with rats, researchers revealed that cord blood cells migrate to the damaged area of the brain in large numbers within 24 hours of administration. In a controlled study of 100 children, Korean doctors reported for the first time that they had successfully treated cerebral palsy with allogeneic cord blood stem cell as well.
In December 2013, another study was launched in University of Texas that involves the use of two forms of stem cell for the treatment of CP. The study aims to compare the safety and effectiveness of banked cord blood to bone marrow stem cells, though previous studies has already claimed that cerebral palsy is a good responder to umbilical cord stem cells. In this same study, it was found out that one of the first signs of improvement is muscle tone as patients begin to be able to move independently; followed by an increased vocabulary, as patients learn to speak out; socialization and improved comprehension is also very noticeable with continuous treatment. According to this research, cerebral palsy may respond well to cord stem cells because the cells differentiate predominantly into glial progenitors that promote white matter repair. Most of the children who have made progress after stem cell therapy continue with several treatments a year along with their physical, occupational, and speech therapy.
