Our eyes are one of the most noticeable features in our face and are often termed as the windows to our soul. As the window, it also often gives hint of our racial background, and unfortunately, our age.

Notice that when we see someone with single eyelids, we often regard them as of Asian origin while people with deep set eyes are often thought of as Westerners. Though racial differences does not actually matter, the standard of beauty had always been inclined to harmonious facial features and youth. For the eyes, the seemingly universal yardstick is a wide double eyelid both for men and women hence the rise double eyelid surgery or Asian blepharoplasty in Thailand.

Since youth is also a very important yardstick for beauty, any visible signs of sagging or the presence of excess skin is almost always frowned upon as well hence the procedure upper eyelid surgery in Thailand.

WHAT IS AN UPPER EYELID SURGERY in Thailand?

Upper eyelid surgery in Thailand covers two popular eyelid surgery procedures, the Asian Blepharoplasty and the Upper Eye lift Surgery.

ASIAN BLEPHAROPLASTY or what is commonly known as double eyelid surgery in Thailand is mostly concerned in creating an artificial fold along the upper eyelid to make the eyes look brighter. This procedure is usually combined with removal of excess fat on the upper part of the eyelid, near the eye brows to lessen or eliminate the puffy look. Since a common misconception for this procedure is that Asians want to look more Western, your surgeon will have to clarify your desired result as most often, patients who undergo this surgery still wants to preserve their native feature. Experienced surgeons like Prof. Somyos Kunachak will be able to deliver the difference between a natural looking improved Asian feature and copy-cat Western look.

EYE LIFT in Thailand on the other hand involves the removal of excess skin on the upper eyelid. In some cases, the eye muscle is also tightened to prolong the effect of the surgery. Though tightening of the eye muscle is never a routine part of a typical eyelid surgery in Thailand, our surgeon sometimes recommend it to patients who are suffering from eyelid ptosis or drooping eyelids.

HOW WILL MY SCARS LOOK LIKE AFTER UPPER EYELID SURGERY in Thailand?

Since scars from upper eyelid surgery cannot be covered, Prof. Somyos Kunachak always tries to make the incision as clean cut as possible so as not to leave an unpleasant mark on the skin. Understand however that there are several factors than can affect healing of the incision site like your personal hygiene, lifestyle (are you a smoker), your health, and your scar formation history. Some people form better scars than others and this if one major factor in this procedure.

Recently, techniques such as the Non-Incision, or the Mini-Incision technique had been developed to further improve the possibility of scarring,  but these technique is not applicable for everyone. Basically, Mini or non-incision technique is only recommended to patients who wants to make the fold of their eyelids deeper or more noticeable, it cannot be done for patients with excess skin or excess fat on the area. For younger patients who would like to do double eyelid surgery, Non-Incision technique may be an option but it will still be considered by your surgeon as the condition of the muscle of the eyelids will also be a major factor.

For Eyelift surgery wherein skin will be resected, a full incision will be necessary. Typically, scars from eyelid surgery in Thailand are inconspicuous and can be covered by make up once it’s healed.

HOW IS UPPER EYELID SURGERY in Thailand PERFORMED AND HOW LONG IS THE RECOVERY PERIOD?

Upper eyelid surgery in Thailand, whether Asian Blepharoplasty or Eyelift surgery, is always done under local anesthesia as our surgeon will need to ask you to open your eyes before fully closing the incision to make sure the 2 sides are as symmetrical as possible.

Surgery time usually takes about 1 hour and recovery is about 5-7 days.

Swelling will be at maximum for the first 48hours after your upper eyelid surgery in Thailand then it will gradually subside. There should be no worries about your sight as post-operative patients will be able to open their eyes immediately after surgery. However, since this procedure is done in an out-patient setting where you can go home after the procedure, it may be wise to make arrangements for your transportation. Rest is also highly recommended after surgery.

Post-operative patients will be able to function on their own after the procedure but we still highly encourage having someone available for assistance. Keeping the eyes closed and rested as much as possible will also facilitate faster healing.

Sutures are removed 5-7 days after upper blepharoplasty in Thailand, depending on the condition of the incision site. Wide rimmed hat or dark sun glasses are highly recommended to be worn when sun exposure is to be expected to protect the incision site from sun damage which may cause darkening of the scar. Application of sunblock (or cosmetic procducts) directly on the incision site is discouraged during he first 2 weeks as chemicals from any type of cosmetic may irritate the incision site.
